Notes

  • Amongst the marriages for 1578: “Memor: It is to be remembered that the Queens highnesse Elizabeth, in hir progresse riding from Melford to Bury S. Aug: Regina 20. ano. Dni. 1578 prd. dined at Lawshall Hall, to the great rejoycing of ye said parish & Country thereabouts.” She dined with Henry Drury, and afterwards had him arrested because he would not convert from Catholicism. Henry’s nephew, Ambrose Rokewood, was one of the Gunpowder Plotters, and was executed in 1605.
  • John Sterne (1610-1670/1), who went after witches with Matthew Hopkins, the infamous “Witchfinder General”, can be seen in the transcriptions.
  • Gap in marriages 1649-1654, 1669-1673.
  • Torn page – burials missing from December to February 1680/1, and marriages 1679 and 1680 missing.
  • 1682 divided between two registers.
  • High number of burials in 1728. There are usually about 10 to 20 burials a year, but in 1728, there’s over 40.
  • Marriages 1754-1762: These have been transcribed from the parchment register. It appears that the minister used the pre-printed paper register after 1754 (as per Hardwicke’s Marriage Ace) too, but also used the parchment register. The marriages from the paper register are on later fiche than I have in my possession, so my transcriptions don’t include signatures/marks or witnesses.
