Halstead

Famous for its silk mills, and once the home of Courtauld’s, the Essex town supplied much of the black crepe for Queen Victoria’s funeral courtege. Fans of the BBC’s cosy crime series Lovejoy will have seen Halstead on their televisions as some scenes were shot here. In the past, Halstead in Essex was known as “South Halstead” to differenciate it from Halstead in Suffolk (presumably Hawstead – although spelt differently now, the names are pronounced pretty much the same).

St Andrew’s parish registers have been transcribed and are available on this site from 1813-1843, and from 1564-1975 on FreeREG. I have tried to find records for non-conformists in the town, although their survival is very patchy. Hopefully something you find here will come in handy!
