Notes

  • Baptisms: starting from 1562. 1615: only one baptism. 1669: most baptisms either unrecorded or didn’t take place.
  • Burials: starting from 1558, but none 1560 or 1561. Seven burials are from an uncertain year, either 1567 or 1568. The only four burials recorded for 1569 are repeated under 1570, so 1569 entries may have been lost. 1615: only one burial. 1667: only one burial (after more burials than usual in 1665 and 1666). 1669: only four recorded. Late 1600s into the early 1700s: few details are provided with burials, other than the name and date. Few relationships are given. Some information, such as “wid.” or “infant” or Mr/Mrs, is provided during this time.
  • Marriages: starting from 1559, but none 1560 or 1561. Two marriages are from an uncertain year, either 1567 or 1568. No marriages recorded 1569. 1615: only one marriage. 1669: only one. Big gap until March 1670. Little information is given with marriages until the mid-1700s – marital statuses, abodes, etc. are thin on the ground, except during the Commonwealth period, when a wealth of extra information is given.
  • Epidemics: based on higher than usual burials in these years, epidemics appear to have hit Bildeston in 1583, 1603-4, and 1665-6. No notes in the registers at these points specify why there was an increase in burials in those years.
  • Only three entries recorded for 1615, all in April, then the register jumps to 1616.
  • Few entries for 1669, with nothing for May all the way to December. They pick up again in January 1669/70.
