Gedding St Mary

Gedding St Mary's, a tiny, ancient church.

Transcriptions for this tiny parish are available to search on FreeREG, from the 1540s to the early 1740s. There’s a handful of stray entries from later in the 1700s. Spreadsheets to appear here soon!

Gedding Hall was once the home of Sir Henry Chamberlaine. He was beheaded in 1491 for his part in the rebellion of Perkin Warbeck, who claimed to be one of the missing “Princes in the Tower”. His widow married the man who was given Gedding Hall, and it was passed down to Sir Henry’s son. It is now the home of former Rolling Stone, Bill Wyman.

Notes

  • Transcribed from the first fiche, which covers much of Gedding’s earliest register.
  • The parish is so small that there are gaps of a year or more between many entries. This is presumably from lack of events, rather than them being lost or not recorded. However, it’s impossible to know what hasn’t been recorded, given how sparse the entries are. The register is quite jumbled, which makes it even harder to know what might be missing. For these reasons, I haven’t provided a list of gaps in the register.
  • Notes on Gedding were recorded in The East Anglian, including information on memorials, inhabitants, and parish register transcriptions from the earliest to have survived, into the mid-1640s.
  • A burial for 1733 (or 1783?) has been entered after some early 1670s burials.
  • The 1749 baptism of Anamariah daughter of Zacharaiah and Elizabeth Daniell has been entered after 1690s marriages. Immediately beneath this baptism are entries for 1783 – the baptism of William son of Samuel and Alice Goole, and the burials of Daniel son of John Curneles, and Peter son of William and Abigail Baker. The burial of William Goole is right at the end of the 1690s marriages. It’s very muddled!
