A marriage licence allegation is an intention to marry – this isn’t proof that a marriage took place, so please check the parish register for the event. However, in some cases, where old registers are irretrievably lost, the marriage licence allegation may be the only extant record.
- These are transcribed from marriage licence allegations held at the Essex Record Office. Please contact them to order your own copy of the original. ERO have indexed all of their MLAs on their catalogue.
- Microfilmed marriage licences are online for free at FamilySeach. I have put together a list of links so you can find them easily.
A selection of Essex marriages licences from the 1690s were published in The East Anglian. Read online.
